A view from the Vet School

This weekend was graduation for many Ohio State students, including my friend Conquistador who graduated from vet school. On Saturday, Conquistador invited me and couple of friends to the vet school's award ceremony, which was a first for the vet school, and I could definitely tell that they haven't done this before as the presenters were scattered all over the place (some were near the stage podium and others were stuck behind the standing crowd in the back of the auditorium that didn't have enough seating for everyone) and award recipients didn't know where to look to get their pictures taken with their respective awards. After the ceremony, Conquistador showed us around the vet school, which I can best describe as a hospital with a barn-ish proportions since they have to deal with large animals such as cows, horses, and bulls. The few things that I learned on the tour were...

1) The IV bags for horses are the size of 1 gallon milk jugs, and horses usually have 3 or 4 of them at the same time.
2) Some animal owners have some strange attachments to alpacas, as the vet school were treating a good number of them. Conquistador maintains that they're the worst animal ever. They spit at you and die real easily, yet people want to spend copious amounts of money to keep them alive.
3) The recovery room for a horse is just a large padded room. Apparently horses wake up from surgery feeling very aggressive, so the doctors put them into this room, wait till the horse regains consciousness, then run out and slam the door while hoping they don't get kicked.
4) Brooks and Dunn are two goat brothers that also happen to be research goats.

Cleveland loves Boobie

After Labron's captivating performance in game 5, Cleveland fans might fear that he might not have enough in the tank to play out game 6. And before the 2nd quarter, Cavs fans though bad karma might have been on their side as the equipment controlling the shot clock and the scoreboard for the game failed to work, which ended up delaying the game for 21 minutes and halted any sort of momentum the Cavs had as they were on a 10-2 run to end the first quarter. Fortunately for the Cavs, Daniel "Boobie" Gibson stepped up in the 4th quarter and hit 5 three-pointers in a row as the Cavs never looked back in their 98-82 victory over the Pistons and sent themselves to the NBA finals for the first time in Cavs history. Although the Cavs'll probably have their work cut out for them against the Spurs, Cleveland fans probably aren't thinking about that since it's been a while since the city's sports teams has had as much success as this Cavs team this year considering their city is deemed as cursed. But we'll wait and see what happens...

Bow down to the King

There was a lot of talk after game 1 in the Eastern Conference final about Labron James passing up the final shot where he likely would have gotten an easy layup to tie the game, but instead he kicked it out to an open Donyell Marshall for a 3 pointer that missed. Well, Labron must have been listening as in double OT, he scored 29 of the last 30 points and hitting 11 of 14 shots during the fourth quarter and 2 OTs on route to a 109-107 win. I don't know what the Pistons were thinking, but you'd figure they would do something to take the ball out of Labron's hands or thought "oh, he couldn't go nuts the entire night", but Labron wouldn't be denied tonight. Those critic from the first game better stop harping about Labron not putting this team on his back because pretty much during overtime, the play was for the Cavs was to clear out for Labron and let him work his magic. Hopefully he'll recover in time for Saturday's game to close out the series and send the Cavs to their first finals in quite a long time.

Some short movie reviews for Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day to all! This summer's been turning out to be the summer of movies for me as I've seen 28 Weeks Later, Shrek the Third, and Pirates 3: At World's End in the past three weeks. Without getting into too much detail (as I tend to forget certain details and names from movies rather easily if I only see it once), I'll give you my feelings about each one of them.

28 Days Later: I'm not a big fan on zombie movies, so this one got a big "meh" from me. There were definitely parts that were intense as you're watching the survivors try to get away from the "rage" plagued people, but I didn't like the way the "rage" virus was introduced into the quarantined city.

Shrek the Third: If you enjoyed the first two movies, you'll likely enjoy this one as well. There's nothing overly groundbreaking about it storywise, but there're plenty of jokes and silly references to laugh at :)

Pirates 3: This movie was long (2 hours and 45 min) but to me it didn't drag as much as the time would indicate (although others might disagree). The biggest thing that bothered me was the convoluted plot which featured more crosses and double crosses than a sneaker shoelace, but fortunately, this movie was a lot more fun than the second one. It felt weird to see Chow Yun Fat as an pirate though o_O
